My Top Pick of the Year

As it comes to the end of 2014, perhaps it is also a good time to pick my favorite #PromoProduct of the year. There is but one criterion that must be fulfill in order for this particular #PromoProduct to become my top pick of the year, which is, it must be a pick in a promotion for at least one client or one event in 2014. Without further ado, may I present to you, my favorite #PromoProduct of 2014.

Zoom™ Energy Mini

Image retrieve from Leeds

Description: Small and compact the 2,800 mAh Li-Ion Samsung battery device is small enough to put into a pocket, yet powerful enough to charge an iPad, iPhone or other tablets and smartphones, like Android OS or Windows mobile devices. "Zoom" charging technology quickly and safely allows you to charge your device at an output speed up to 2.1 Amps, so you can keep your mobile devices operational.

Overall, I had great success with Powerbank in 2014. However, I do find the products from the Zoom™ brand are well constructed and economically priced. This particular item also allow for full color imprint (at additional cost), which allows for artistically creative design to elevate client’s brand if needed.

As I look forward to 2015, I wish to spend more time on this blog and write more about things that I come across in the #PromoProduct world. For those visited this blog, Thank you for spending the time and I hope you will come back for another visit in 2015.

Happy New Year!

Chocolate Bar

We are now half way through November, and I hope you've decided the promotional tactics for Christmas. If not, just note that you are cutting it close, considering some project may take up to 4 weeks to complete. Especially in the case with #PromoProduct, logistical planning should be done as early as possible to ensure delivery prior to Christmas Day.

My favorite #PromoProduct during this time is Chocolate bar. Not just a normal 1.75-2oz chocolate bar with a customizable wrapper, but rather a custom molded 2lb chocolate bar with a full color wrapper band as decoration. This particular chocolate bar is perfect as business-to-business gift. You may choose to package it with an engraved hammer for your recipients to break the chocolate into smaller, edible pieces.

I also believe that this is the perfect time to promo with chocolate-made items as well, especially for Canada. The main reason is the lower temperature; shipping chocolate-made items during warmer temperature will require additional packaging cost to ensure the chocolates do not melt during transit. In the same token, shipments during the lower temperature seasons eliminate those costs completely.

Mobile Device Accessories

Arguably, mobile phone is probably the most often used technology by the general public these days. No wonder there are hundreds of #PromoProduct that accessorize mobile phones in the market; cases, screen cloths, Bluetooth® headsets, speakers and pen-stylus just to name a few.

My recent favorite is a desk accessory that holds mobile devices, and it also double as a screen cleaner. It is called The Wedge™ Mobile Device Stand. Not only it is useful and functional, it also does not discriminate between Smartphones model; it will work with non-Smartphone too, in case you are wondering. Finally, this particular item allows for a full-color design, so let your creativity fly!

Seasonally Minded...

Thanksgiving Day was last week in Canada, which explains why I took a week off from writing this blog :). Now that I think about it, there are at least one major seasonal event on every month of the year. Some of these seasonal event may be universal (ex. Christmas Day, Valentine's Day), others are more local and unique to a specific region (ex. British Columbia Day).

I think as marketer, we should be extensively aware of these seasonal holidays and events. These themed-days provide opportunities to do a communication, or a touch point, to connect with clients and potential clients. We may not necessary need to plan something for every single one of them, but note that it may become a gateway to a dialog for future business opportunities.

Our office usually does something for Halloween every year and this year is no different. The #PromoProduct of choice is a custom carved pumpkins with our clients' name/logo/message on them. It is not so much a promotional-oriented effort, it is more of a special gift for our key clients. Once again, a touch point generated by a seasonal event.

Be Creative By Design

Business runs on budget planning and proper expenditure execution. Marketing, being one of the business functions, cannot escape the fate of the limitation by a certain budget. To put this into context of purchasing #PromoProduct as a marketing means, these goods of supporting promotional goal(s) are drawn from the overall marketing budget.

So here's a thought, we easily get caught up finding the right #PromoProduct within a certain budget. Focus on items that have a price point near the maximum of the predetermined budget level, then slap a logo on these theme-fitted, functional products in hoping the end user would keep and use them.

Without a doubt, this model does work. But a couple questions pop up immediately: What stopping your competitor to do the same thing, promo the same way? How can you differentiate your brand by choosing items that are easily accessible by everyone?

There is a solution to both of these questions - Be Creative By Design, in terms of the imprint. Shift some of the focus from the item to the design; having a little bit more that just a plain logo. Design a theme that will work with the overall branding of a logo, then integrate it in #PromoProduct that allows for such creativity. Select items that allow different decoration methods (transfer, deboss, laser, etc), have large and multiple imprint areas, support full color printing capability. For wearable, position the artwork away from the common areas such as left chest and right sleeves. At the end of the day, be different!

I did come across a project this week that support this Creative by Design model. It is a square acrylic paperweight for the University of Alberta - Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences. A prime example of a stunning full color design on a simple #PromoProduct.

Reusable Bottle - Not Just For Water

Reusable bottle is one of the most common picks as #PromoProduct. I mean think about it, this is an item that is common to the mass, fairly inexpensive, a environmentally friendly option to plastic labeled-water bottle, and fit for many occasions. Because of those same reasons, the market is saturated with thousands of different types of reusable bottles. Therefore, when it comes to choosing an effective #PromoProduct, the question should be, "which one of those reusable water bottle stands out from the crowd and help elevate brand exposure?"

To make it simple, we can generalize and divide reusable bottles into 2 types, "Plastic" and "Glass".

One of the major benefits of "Plastic" reusable bottles is cost. They are relatively less expensive than their "Glass" counterpart; material and labor expenses of manufacturing plastic items are less costly than glass, which allows them to sit at a lower price point at the consumer level. They are also light-weight and shatter proof. BPA (Bisphenol A) is a concern at one point, but majority of the current reusable bottles employ BPA-free materials. One of which being the Tritan™ copolyester material.

On the other hand, "Glass" bottles are more expensive, but they do have higher perceive value than "Plastic" bottles. They are also more desirable when it comes to the containment of hot drinks such as tea or coffee. Glass allows for minimum contamination of taste since there is no residue from the container itself. The end users also don't have to worry about BPA, for there is no plastic material in the chamber. Note: the cap can still be plastic though.

Recently, there are more and more attachments added to both "Plastic" and "Glass" bottles. Accessories such as filter, infuser, and strainer have become very popular in the market, targeting users with specific needs. To add another element onto the bottle, there are also the single-wall or double-wall bottles (mostly for glass) to choose from. But don't forget, the more bells and whistles one adds to the bottle, the more expensive that #PromoProduct becomes.

I recently had an opportunity to try out this new asobu® bottle called "Simply Clear". It is a 14oz double-wall glass bottle with a modern design and a push button, leak proof cap/valve. Works perfectly with hot or cold drinks and looks pretty when filled with Jelly Beans!

Backpack, Stylish and Simple

I can't help but to notice something as I recently traveled on the light-rail train to an event. Now before I explain what it is, perhaps I should give a little bit of background information. This particular light-rail train travels through residential areas, high schools, colleges/universities, and the downtown district - where major head offices and financial institutions located. During rush hours, the train carts were filled with students and office workers, and most often than not, each of them would carry a bag (or two).

You may find it weird, but the thing I noticed was not the people on the train, but rather the backpacks that other passengers were carrying; there were a lot of them and not a single one was the same!

Backpack is definitely making a come back; it is no longer a "student-exclusive" accessory. People are more likely to carry their laptops and tablets everywhere they go, along with other items such as file folders, books, and food/drink. Such combination add up to quite a considerable amount of weights to carry. So therefore, comfortableness and available features are the major factors when it comes to selecting a backpack.

So here is one of my most recent findings, a stylish and simple backpack for that next #PromoProduct selection.

This one is called the "Commander Backpack". The size is 19" x 13" x 9", and it is available in Black or Grey. It is constructed with Herringbone/Tarpaulin Fabric to give that comfortable feel. Feature a tablet window compartment for a quick access and protection of tablet. Foam padded shoulder straps with adjustable strap allows for fitting of different body shape.

Chocolaty Goodness

This is absolutely one of my favorite #PromoProduct ideas of all time. This particular idea generates a positive and lasting impression for the receivers, and it allows for necessary customization to fit different occasions, projects, and clients. It is unique and packaged beautifully. The best part is, it made up of chocolate!

Have you guessed it yet? A hint? How about "The Chocolate Melts In Your Mouth-Not In Your Hand®"? Yes! I'm talking about M&M's, specifically the Personalized M&M's!

(Image from http://www.mymms.com/)

I'm a huge fan-boy for M&M's; my desk and my room are filled with M&M's toys and dispensers. The mug that is sitting in front of me resemble "Yellow", who is the mascot for peanut M&M's. You can imagine my excitement when I got to do a project with M&M's. Think about it, a promotional giveaway with personalized M&M's; candies with colors match to the branding requirements, and a short celebratory message printed on the chocolate itself. Sounded heavenly, is it not?

Try bundling with other #PromoProduct for that extra kick towards the promotional effort. M&M's offer other items to compliment its chocolates, but don't be afraid to think outside the box and create your own combo. Don't forget, chocolate goes with everything!

Intro: What is #PromoProduct?

First, let's begin with a simple exercise. Have a look around your desk (or your immediate surroundings), can you spot anything that may consider as a "#PromoProduct"?

Do you see a pen printed with a company logo with contact information? or perhaps you spot a T-shirt with a specific event printed on it? If you truly pay attention, you may find even more.

#PromoProduct, or promotional product in full, is everywhere. It is one of the ways that companies try to get their brand or brand message(s) in front their clients/customers. A item that may or may not relate directly with the products and services offer by that particular company, but it is useful enough (for the most part) that the receiver will keep it for an extended amount of time. All in all, #PromoProduct is an promotional marketing tool that is use for brand communication, used in conjunction with other marketing tools such as advertising, direct marketing, in-house promotion, etc.

Now that I got the technicality part out of the way, I can now focus more on sharing ideas which I happened to come across. My future posts will most likely product based, but i will occasionally throw in some marketing practices and other related information about the promotional product industry.
